BlueCurrent Fisheries Research is seeking a Senior Fisheries Scientist to lead advanced research on sustainable fish stocks and ecosystem-based management in the Pacific Northwest. This role combines fieldwork, data analysis, and stakeholder collaboration to drive actionable insights for policy and industry partners. The successful candidate will oversee complex stock assessments, build predictive models, and mentor junior scientists in a fast-paced, collaborative environment in Vancouver, BC.
Key opportunities include shaping research priorities, publishing in peer‑reviewed journals, and presenting findings to government agencies, industry groups, and community organizations.
Responsibility
- Lead design and execution of stock assessments and ecosystem-based management studies.
- Develop and implement statistical models using R, Python, and GIS to analyze catch data, abundance indices, and habitat associations.
- Coordinate field sampling campaigns, ensure data quality, safety, and regulatory compliance in partnership with fisheries agencies.
- Collaborate with government, Indigenous communities, and industry stakeholders to translate research into policy and practice.
- Mentor and supervise junior scientists and technicians; manage project budgets and timelines.
- Communicate findings through reports, presentations, and peer-reviewed publications; represent the organization at conferences and meetings.
- Lead grant proposals, fundraising efforts, and management of research projects to secure ongoing funding.
Qualification
- PhD in Fisheries Science, Marine Biology, Ecological Modeling, or a related field; or MSc with substantial relevant experience.
- 5+ years of experience in fisheries stock assessment, population dynamics, or ecosystem-based management.
- Strong programming skills in R and Python; experience with GIS (ArcGIS or QGIS).
- Proven ability to manage complex datasets, conduct advanced statistical analyses, and interpret results for diverse audiences.
- Track record of peer-reviewed publications and successful grant proposals.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills; strong stakeholder engagement and collaboration capabilities.
- Ability to work in the Vancouver area and willingness to travel for fieldwork and partner meetings.
