Job description
Northstar Fisheries Institute is seeking a Senior Fisheries Scientist to lead field and analytical programs in Alaska. This role oversees field surveys, data management, and stock assessment projects that inform sustainable management decisions for commercial and recreational fisheries.
You will collaborate with government agencies, universities, and industry partners to translate complex data into practical recommendations. A passion for marine ecosystems and strong communication skills are essential.
Responsibility
- Plan, coordinate, and supervise field sampling campaigns for catch, effort, and biological indicators
- Maintain quality control of data collection, processing, and storage
- Develop and apply stock assessment models and analytical methods
- Analyze environmental and fishing effort data to identify trends and risks
- Prepare technical reports, presentations, and management recommendations
- Collaborate with managers, researchers, and stakeholders to translate findings into policy
- Supervise junior staff and field crews, ensuring safety and compliance
Qualification
- Bachelor's degree in Marine Biology, Fisheries Science, or related field; advanced degree preferred
- 3+ years in fisheries research or stock assessment
- Proficiency in R or Python and GIS software
- Experience with data management and statistical analysis
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to work in challenging field conditions and travel as needed
- Relevant certifications and licenses (e.g., marine safety, valid driver's license)
