Job description

NovaForge IP is seeking a Senior Intellectual Property Counsel to lead a wide range of IP initiatives for our rapidly growing technology practice. This role combines patent strategy, licensing negotiations, and cross-functional collaboration to protect and monetize innovative offerings.

As a member of our legal team, you will oversee patent prosecution, manage outside counsel, and advise on trademark and copyright matters, while shaping our global IP strategy.

Responsibility

  • Lead and manage patent prosecution strategy, including drafting, filing, and office action responses for software and hardware innovations.
  • Develop and implement IP strategy aligned with product roadmaps and business goals.
  • Oversee clearance, freedom-to-operate analyses, and IP risk assessment for new products.
  • Negotiate and structure licensing, technology transfer, and collaboration agreements.
  • Coordinate with Product, Engineering, and Compliance teams to identify and protect IP assets.
  • Manage relationships with outside IP counsel and oversee budget and milestones.
  • Monitor competitive IP landscape and provide actionable insights to leadership.
  • Mentor junior IP team members and foster a culture of rigorous IP diligence.

Qualification

  • Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school; admitted to practice in California or eligible for admission.
  • Minimum 7 years of experience in intellectual property, including patent prosecution for software/hardware and IP strategy at a tech company or top law firm.
  • Strong technical background in computer science, electrical engineering, or related fields; preferred patent bar registration (USPTO).
  • Proven track record in licensing, technology transfer, and complex contract negotiations.
  • Excellent analytical, drafting, and communication skills; ability to influence cross-functional teams.
  • Experience managing outside counsel and IP budgets; demonstrated leadership and mentorship.
  • In-depth knowledge of USPTO rules, patent landscape, and trademark/copyright matters relevant to tech products.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and handle multiple priorities with tight deadlines.
