Harborline Media, a leading city newsroom renowned for watchdog journalism, seeks a Senior Investigative Reporter to join our New York City desk. You will pursue high-impact investigative stories, collaborate across platforms, and mentor the next generation of reporters. In this role, you’ll work with editors, data journalists, photographers, and podcast producers to conceive and execute compelling investigations that stand up to scrutiny and spark change.
Responsibility
- Lead investigative projects from concept to publication, including planning, sourcing, and verification.
- Conduct in-depth interviews, public records requests, and data analysis to uncover meaningful narratives.
- Collaborate with editors to craft compelling storytelling across print, web, and multimedia formats.
- Build and maintain robust sources, ensuring ethics and transparency.
- Mentor junior reporters and provide guidance on investigative techniques.
- Fact-check, editorially refine, and ensure accuracy under tight deadlines.
- Coordinate with legal and compliance teams to assess risk and protect sources.
- Represent the organization at industry events and community forums to advance accountability journalism.
Qualification
- Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, or related field; master’s preferred.
- Minimum 5-7 years of investigative reporting experience in a newsroom or similar environment.
- Proven track record of major investigative stories with impact.
- Strong data literacy: proficient in Excel/Sheets, SQL basics, and data visualization concepts.
- Expertise in public records requests (FOIA/PRR), legal considerations, and newsroom ethics.
- Excellent source development, interviewing, and storytelling skills.
- Ability to manage multiple deadlines and adapt to fast-paced newsroom.
- Fluency in English; additional languages a plus; willingness to work evenings/weekends as needed.
