Job description
Apex Weather Analytics is seeking a Senior Meteorology Data Scientist to join our Weather Systems team in Boulder, Colorado. You will design and implement advanced models to improve weather forecasting, deliver actionable insights, and collaborate with researchers and engineers to translate data into practical solutions for operations and risk management.
In this role, you will work with large meteorological datasets, run numerical weather prediction experiments, and contribute to the development of open-source tools for data analysis and visualization.
Responsibility
- Architect and implement data-driven meteorology models, including statistical and machine learning approaches.
- Develop and validate numerical weather prediction experiments and forecast guidance products.
- Lead data wrangling, quality control, and reproducible analysis pipelines in Python and R.
- Collaborate with meteorologists, software engineers, and operations teams to translate research into actionable tools.
- Design and deliver compelling data visualizations and dashboards for stakeholders.
- Prepare technical documentation, reports, and peer-reviewed outputs.
- Mentor junior staff and contribute to grant proposals and project planning.
Qualification
- Master's degree or PhD in Meteorology, Atmospheric Science, Computer Science, Data Science, or a related field.
- Strong programming experience in Python and R; proficiency with NumPy, SciPy, pandas, xarray, and scikit-learn.
- Experience with Linux/Unix environments, version control (Git), and reproducible research practices.
- Hands-on experience with numerical weather prediction models, reanalysis datasets, and weather data sources (e.g., ERA5, GFS).
- Proven ability to design, implement, and evaluate data-driven forecasting products; strong statistical and analytical skills.
- Excellent communication skills and ability to translate complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
- Publish research findings or deliverables and contribute to collaborative projects.
