Blue Horizon Marine Research invites applications for a Senior Oceanographer to lead advanced oceanographic research, data analyses, and field programs that advance understanding of coastal and open ocean processes. This role combines hands-on fieldwork, instrument calibration, numerical modeling, and cross-disciplinary collaboration with climate and marine biodiversity teams.
We seek a strategic thinker with proven leadership in multi-institution projects, a track record of peer-reviewed publications, and the ability to translate complex data into actionable insights for policymakers and stakeholders.
Responsibility
- Plan, execute, and oversee oceanographic field campaigns, instrument deployments, maintenance, and data collection across coastal and open-ocean environments.
- Design, implement, and oversee data processing, quality control, and data archival workflows to ensure reproducible research.
- Develop and apply numerical models to interpret oceanographic observations and forecast coastal processes.
- Collaborate with cross-disciplinary teams in climate science, biology, and coastal engineering on grants, publications, and research deliverables.
- Publish peer-reviewed manuscripts, present findings at conferences, and contribute to open data initiatives.
- Mentor graduate students, technicians, and junior scientists; supervise research assistants and field crews.
- Ensure safety, permitting, data management, and ethical standards across all field activities.
Qualification
- PhD in Oceanography, Physical Oceanography, Marine Science, or a closely related field; or a Master's degree with substantial research leadership.
- 5+ years of experience in oceanographic field campaigns, data analysis, and leadership of research teams.
- Proficiency with ocean instruments such as CTD, ADCP, Argo profilers, gliders, and AUVs; strong data QA/QC skills.
- Strong programming ability in Python, MATLAB, and R; experience with netCDF and common ocean data formats.
- Experience with numerical modeling and data assimilation using ROMS, MITgcm, or similar models.
- Track record of peer-reviewed publications and success in grant writing and project management.
- Excellent communication, collaboration, and mentoring skills; ability to work across multidisciplinary teams.
