BlueHorizon Oceanographic Institute is seeking an innovative Oceanographer to join our multidisciplinary team in Seattle. This full-time role focuses on coastal and open ocean processes, data integration, and field campaigns that advance scientific understanding and environmental stewardship.
You will collaborate with marine scientists, engineers, and data scientists to study ocean circulation, biogeochemistry, and ecosystem health. The position offers opportunities to publish in peer reviewed journals, present results at conferences, and contribute to policy and conservation efforts.
Responsibility
- Lead research projects focused on coastal and open ocean processes, including study design and execution of field campaigns.
- Deploy and maintain oceanographic instruments (CTD rosettes, moorings, gliders) and coordinate logistical planning for fieldwork.
- Analyze multi parameter datasets using Python, MATLAB, and R; create robust data processing pipelines and visualizations.
- Develop and apply numerical models to interpret observations and forecast ocean conditions.
- Contribute to data management, quality control, metadata documentation, and data sharing with collaborators.
- Prepare peer reviewed manuscripts, progress reports, and grant proposals; present findings to stakeholders and at conferences.
- Mentor graduate students and technicians; lead training on sampling methods and instrumentation.
- Ensure safety, ethical, and regulatory compliance during field activities and in the lab.
Qualification
- PhD in Oceanography or related field, or MSc with substantial research and field experience.
- Strong background in physical oceanography, data analysis, and modeling; proficient in Python, MATLAB, and R.
- Hands-on experience deploying CTD, moorings, floats, gliders, and other oceanographic instrumentation.
- Proven ability to manage large, multidisciplinary datasets and develop reproducible workflows.
- Demonstrated record of peer reviewed publications and effective scientific communication.
- Ability to work independently and in cross disciplinary teams; strong project management and collaboration skills.
- Willingness to travel and conduct fieldwork in coastal and offshore environments.
