Job description
BlueHorizon Marine Institute invites applications for a Senior Oceanography Research Scientist to lead interdisciplinary programs in physical oceanography, coastal processes, and biogeochemical cycles. This is a hands on leadership role combining field operations, advanced data analytics, and cross institutional collaboration to advance understanding of ocean dynamics and climate interactions.
The successful candidate will design and execute field campaigns, manage data platforms, mentor junior scientists, and translate scientific findings into policy-relevant insights for coastal resilience and marine resource management.
We offer a collaborative environment in a premier coastal research campus with access to vessels, state of the art laboratories, high performance computing, and robust funding to pursue ambitious science questions.
Responsibility
- Lead and coordinate field campaigns using CTD rosettes, ADCPs, gliders, and autonomous underwater vehicles to collect high-quality oceanographic data.
- Develop and apply physical and biogeochemical models to interpret observations and quantify coastal and open-ocean processes.
- Oversee data management, quality control, and dissemination through internal platforms and external data portals.
- Publish findings in leading journals and present at national and international conferences.
- Mentor graduate students, postdocs, and junior staff; secure funding through proposals and collaborations.
- Collaborate with cross disciplinary teams in climate, ecology, and ocean engineering to address complex coastal challenges.
- Communicate science to stakeholders, policymakers, and the public to support ocean stewardship and resilience planning.
Qualification
- PhD in Oceanography, Marine Science, or a closely related field; equivalent research experience considered.
- At least 5 years of post PhD research in physical oceanography, coastal dynamics, or biogeochemical cycles.
- Strong computational skills with proficiency in Python and MATLAB; experience with R is a plus.
- Experience with oceanographic instrumentations such as CTD, ADCP, gliders, and remote sensing data.
- Demonstrated ability to lead teams, manage projects, and secure funding.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills with track record of peer reviewed publications.
- Willingness to travel for field campaigns and conferences as needed.
