Nova Dance Collective is hiring a visionary Dance Director to shape our artistic program, lead the choreographic process, and nurture a growing troupe of professional and student dancers. Based in New York City, this role combines creative leadership with seasonal planning, community outreach, and multi-disciplinary collaboration to elevate performance standards.
The ideal candidate will fuse technical mastery with imaginative storytelling, foster an inclusive company culture, and drive ambitious commissions from concept to stage.
Responsibilities and opportunities include close collaboration with the repertory team, mentorship of dancers, and partnerships with venues, schools, and collaborators across the city.
Responsibility
- Provide artistic leadership for all company productions, shaping repertoire and movement language.
- Lead choreographic development from concept through final staging, ensuring strong narrative and technical precision.
- Plan annual season, commissions, and collaborations with guest artists and schools.
- Oversee casting, rehearsals, and performance readiness; monitor dancer wellness and safety.
- Manage rehearsal schedules, production calendars, and cross-department coordination with lighting, sound, and stage management.
- Build community outreach programs and youth workshops to broaden audience engagement.
- Represent the company publicly, cultivate venue partnerships, and assist with fundraising and grant reporting.
Qualification
- Bachelor degree in dance or related field; MFA preferred.
- Minimum 5 years of professional choreographic or directorial experience, with a demonstrated track record in contemporary and/or classical repertoires.
- Strong knowledge of multiple dance styles including contemporary, ballet, and street styles; ability to fuse genres.
- Proven experience in NYC or regional performance spaces and audience development.
- Excellent leadership, interpersonal, and collaborative communication skills.
- Ability to work evenings and weekends; willingness to travel for performances or workshops.
- Experience with casting, rehearsal planning, and movement notation; commitment to dancer safety and inclusive practices.
