Job description

Join CivicTech Archives as a Digital Archivist and help preserve vital records for researchers, policymakers, and the public. This high‑impact role blends traditional archival practices with modern digital preservation, metadata standardization, and thoughtful access initiatives. We offer a collaborative environment, strong investment in professional development, and a path to leadership in a growing team.

As part of our archival program, you will steward both digital and physical collections, drive metadata workflows, and ensure long‑term accessibility of assets. You will collaborate across IT, curatorial, and policy teams to enhance discoverability while maintaining rigorous governance and security standards.

Responsibility

  • Develop and implement archival strategies for digital and physical collections, including access policies and retention schedules.
  • Lead metadata creation and curation using standards such as Dublin Core, EAD, METS, and MARC; design taxonomy and controlled vocabularies.
  • Manage digitization projects from planning to QA, including image capture, OCR/text extraction, quality control, and format selection.
  • Oversee long-term digital preservation workflows using tools like Archivematica or equivalent; manage bitstream integrity and format migration plans.
  • Coordinate with IT and research teams to optimize discovery interfaces, APIs, and user-facing search capabilities.
  • Ensure compliance with legal, ethical, and regulatory requirements for records management and public access.
  • Provide training and mentorship to staff on archival practices, metadata standards, and preservation workflows.

Qualification

  • Bachelor's degree in Library Science, Information Management, Archives, or a related field; advanced degree preferred.
  • 3+ years of experience in archival management, digital preservation, or records management.
  • Strong knowledge of metadata standards (Dublin Core, EAD, METS, MARC) and taxonomy design.
  • Experience with digital preservation tools (Archivematica, BitCurator, LOCKSS) and handling of common archival file formats.
  • Proficiency in scripting (Python or similar) for automation; familiarity with SQL or data querying is a plus.
  • Excellent communication, project management, and cross-functional collaboration skills.
  • Familiarity with information governance, privacy considerations, and applicable regulatory requirements.
