Job description
At Apex Power & Energy, we design and deploy cutting-edge electrical power systems for utilities, industrials, and large commercial clients. We seek a skilled Electrical Power Systems Engineer to lead project delivery from concept through commissioning. You will collaborate with multi-disciplinary teams to ensure safe, reliable, and compliant power solutions that meet performance, cost, and schedule targets.
As a key member of our Houston-based team, you will apply your expertise in dynamic modeling, protection schemes, and system analysis to optimize grid stability and equipment reliability. This role offers a clear path to leadership, industry-recognized project exposure, and competitive compensation.
Responsibility
- Lead electrical power system design for generation, transmission, distribution, and substation projects from concept through commissioning.
- Develop and validate dynamic models using ETAP, SKM, PSS/E, and MATLAB/Simulink; perform load flow, short-circuit, transient, and protection coordination studies.
- Specify equipment, cables, protective relays, switchgear, and protection schemes; participate in vendor selection and FAT/SAT testing.
- Conduct fault analysis, protection coordination, arc flash assessments, and reliability-centered maintenance planning.
- Prepare technical documentation, calculations, one-line diagrams, and design drawings; ensure compliance with IEC, IEEE, NEC/IEC standards.
- Collaborate with civil, mechanical, and control teams; provide technical guidance to junior engineers and drafters.
- Support project scheduling, risk assessment, and client communications; contribute to proposals and cost estimations.
Qualification
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering; PE license preferred; Texas licensure a plus.
- 5+ years of electrical power engineering experience in utility-scale or industrial projects.
- Proficiency with ETAP, SKM, PSS/E, and MATLAB/Simulink; strong capability in single-line diagrams and protective relaying.
- Solid knowledge of IEC 61850, IEEE standards, NEC/NESC; experience with arc-flash analysis.
- Experience with protection coordination, fault analysis, and dynamic modeling; hands-on with switchgear, transformers, and relays.
- Excellent communication, collaboration, and project-management skills; ability to mentor junior team members.
- Willingness to travel as needed and to work in a dynamic, client-facing environment.
