Job description

Join our Aberdeen-based team as a Fisheries Biologist to support sustainable fisheries and marine conservation initiatives. This role combines field data collection, laboratory analysis, and collaboration with government agencies, industry partners, and local stakeholders.

As part of our Environment & Conservation division, you'll help drive evidence-based decisions that safeguard fish stocks and aquatic habitats.

Responsibility

  • Lead field surveys and stock assessments for commercially important species in assigned regions.
  • Collect, process, and analyze fishery data using standard methods and statistical tools.
  • Ensure compliance with permits, licensing, and environmental regulations; liaise with fisheries agencies.
  • Develop and refine sustainable harvest recommendations in collaboration with stakeholders.
  • Prepare technical reports, datasets, and visualizations for internal teams and external partners.
  • Support hatchery, aquaculture, and habitat restoration projects as needed.
  • Present findings to senior management and external partners; contribute to grant proposals.
  • Travel to field sites as required and supervise junior staff or interns.

Qualification

  • Bachelor's degree in Fisheries, Marine Biology, Ecology, or related field; master's preferred.
  • 5+ years of field experience in fisheries or marine science.
  • Strong statistical analysis skills; proficiency with R or Python.
  • Experience with GIS (ArcGIS/QGIS) and data visualization.
  • Knowledge of UK fisheries policy, stock assessment methods, and environmental regulations.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication; ability to prepare reports and present to diverse audiences.
  • Ability to work in remote field conditions, travel domestically, and operate in team settings.
  • Valid driver's license; willingness to travel.
