Job description

BlueHarbor Institute for Marine Science is seeking a highly motivated Senior Fisheries Scientist to lead fisheries research programs, conduct stock assessments, and inform sustainable management decisions in the Gulf of Maine. This role combines fieldwork, data analysis, and policy collaboration to support resilient marine ecosystems and thriving coastal communities.

You'll join a collaborative team of scientists, technicians, and policy specialists dedicated to rigorous science, transparent reporting, and stakeholder engagement.

Responsibility

  • Lead design, execution, and management of stock assessment and population dynamics studies for key species.
  • Plan and supervise field sampling campaigns such as surveys, catch sampling, tagging, and observer programs while ensuring compliance with permits and permits scope.
  • Analyze catch per unit effort, age and size structure, recruitment trends using R and Python, and visualize results for stakeholders.
  • Develop integrated management recommendations in collaboration with regional fishery managers and community stakeholders.
  • Prepare technical reports, peer review manuscripts, and presentations for agencies such as NOAA and ASMFC, as well as state partners.
  • Mentor junior scientists and technicians, manage project timelines, budgets, and contractor relationships.
  • Lead data governance, quality control, and development of decision support tools and dashboards.

Qualification

  • Master's degree in Fisheries Science, Marine Biology, Ecology, or related field, or PhD for advanced leadership roles.
  • Minimum 5 years of professional experience in fisheries research, stock assessment, or related disciplines.
  • Strong statistical and modeling skills with experience in R and Python; familiarity with population dynamics and management strategy evaluation.
  • Proven field sampling experience, design of sampling programs, gear selectivity, and permit compliance.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication with track record of technical reports and stakeholder engagement.
  • Project management experience including grant writing, budgeting, and cross functional collaboration.
  • Knowledge of US federal and state fisheries regulations and policy processes.
