Job description
Smarthire by SEEK, on behalf of our client NOLEK SDN BHD, is seeking a proactive Mechanical Designer to join their engineering team in Simpang Ampat, Penang. This is a hands-on design role for a talented engineer who can transform concepts into robust, manufacturable parts and assemblies. You will collaborate with cross-functional teams to deliver components that meet performance, cost, and schedule targets while upholding the highest standards of quality and safety.
In this role, you will be responsible for creating and maintaining accurate 3D models and 2D drawings, selecting materials and processes, and driving design-for-manufacture (DFM) initiatives. You will participate in design reviews, perform tolerance and fit analyses, and ensure that all documentation (BOMs, revision histories, and drawings) is complete and compliant with internal standards. The successful candidate will balance creativity with practicality, delivering reliable, cost-effective solutions for production environments in Penang and beyond.
Key attributes for success include strong attention to detail, excellent communication, and the ability to work effectively in a fast-paced manufacturing setting. If you are passionate about mechanical design, enjoy problem-solving, and want to contribute to cutting-edge products, this is the role for you.
Responsibility
- Design and model mechanical components and assemblies using SolidWorks and AutoCAD; produce precise 3D models and 2D drawings with clear BOMs.
- Conduct tolerance analysis (GD&T) and DFMA evaluations to ensure manufacturability and cost-effectiveness.
- Collaborate with engineers, prototype specialists, and manufacturing teams to refine concepts and optimize performance, weight, and assembly time.
- Create and maintain design documentation, change control, and revision histories to support traceability.
- Support prototype builds, testing, and validation activities; iterate designs based on test results and feedback.
- Liaise with suppliers and vendors to source components, verify manufacturability, and obtain lead times and quotes.
- Ensure compliance with company standards, safety regulations, and quality systems throughout the design process.
Qualification
- Diploma or Bachelorβs degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field.
- 2+ years of hands-on mechanical design experience in manufacturing or product development.
- Proficiency in SolidWorks and AutoCAD; strong 3D CAD modelling skills.
- Solid understanding of GD&T, tolerancing, BOM management, and documentation practices.
- Experience with prototyping, testing, and design validation activities.
- Strong communication skills and ability to work cross-functionally in a fast-paced environment.
- Knowledge of manufacturing processes (machining, sheet metal, plastics) and assembly practices is a plus.
