Job description
Based in Portland, Maine, BlueHarbor Fisheries Institute seeks a Senior Fisheries Biologist to lead sustainability initiatives, stock assessments, and regulatory compliance across field programs in the Northeast.
In this role you will design adaptive stock assessment plans, coordinate with state and federal managers, engage with fishing communities, and mentor junior scientists to ensure robust, policy-relevant science.

Responsibility
- Lead design and execution of stock assessments and fishery independent surveys.
- Develop and implement sustainability indicators and harvest control rules in collaboration with managers.
- Coordinate field sampling, data cleaning, and quality assurance for multi-year programs.
- Manage relationships with stakeholders including fishers, industry groups, and regulatory agencies.
- Prepare scientific reports, policy briefs, and presentations for diverse audiences.
- Support grant writing, budgeting, and project management to secure funding for research.
- Mentor and supervise junior scientists and technicians, fostering a collaborative work environment.
- Advance data visualization and decision support tools using GIS and statistical software.
Qualification
- Master's degree or PhD in Fisheries Science, Marine Biology, Oceanography, or related field.
- At least 5 years of experience in fisheries stock assessments, stock status reporting, and fisheries management.
- Strong proficiency in GIS (ArcGIS/QGIS), R, Python, and data management.
- Experience with stakeholder engagement, policy communication, and working with regulatory agencies (NOAA, state agencies, etc.).
- Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects, meet deadlines, and work collaboratively in cross-disciplinary teams.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills; ability to translate science for non-technical audiences.
- Knowledge of sustainable aquaculture practices and ecosystem-based management approaches is a plus.
- Willingness to travel for fieldwork and stakeholder meetings as required.
