Job description

BlueHarbor Fisheries Institute is seeking a Senior Fisheries Biologist to lead sustainable stock assessments, ecosystem analyses, and conservation initiatives in the Gulf of Maine region. This is a full-time, on-site role based in Portland, ME, with opportunities for fieldwork and cross-sector collaboration.

In this role you will partner with researchers, government agencies, and industry stakeholders to advance evidence-based decision making that supports healthy fish populations and vibrant coastal communities.

Responsibility

  • Lead and manage stock assessment projects, data analyses, and interpretation to inform management decisions.
  • Design and implement field sampling, data collection protocols, and verification workflows.
  • Develop scientifically rigorous reports and presentations for government entities, NGOs, and industry partners.
  • Collaborate with regulatory agencies to support sustainable fisheries policies and compliance with relevant standards.
  • Mentor junior scientists, coordinate cross-functional teams, and foster a collaborative lab culture.
  • Maintain and improve data pipelines, quality control, and reproducible workflows (R, Python).
  • Represent the organization at conferences, stakeholder meetings, and public outreach events.
  • Contribute to grant proposals and project funding opportunities to support research initiatives.

Qualification

  • Master’s degree in Fisheries Science, Marine Biology, Ecology, or a closely related field; PhD preferred.
  • Five+ years of experience in stock assessment, stock assessment modeling, or applied fisheries research.
  • Strong data analysis skills using R and Python; experience with Bayesian methods is a plus.
  • Proficiency in GIS tools (ArcGIS or QGIS) and spatial analysis.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication; ability to translate complex science for diverse audiences.
  • Demonstrated project management experience and ability to work with multi-stakeholder teams.
  • Knowledge of U.S. federal fisheries management (MSA) and regulatory frameworks; travel as needed.
