Job description
BlueCurrent Fisheries Ltd. is seeking a Senior Fisheries Scientist to lead applied research and resource management projects in New Zealand waters. You will design studies, oversee fieldwork, analyze catch and effort data, and collaborate with regulators, industry stakeholders and academic partners. This is a hybrid role with field and office work based in Auckland.
In this role you will drive impactful science that informs sustainable harvest strategies, stock assessments, bycatch reduction, and habitat monitoring. You will translate complex data into practical guidance for managers, industry partners, and communities.
Responsibility
- Lead the design, execution, and interpretation of fisheries research and stock assessments.
- Manage data pipelines and statistical analyses using R, Python, and SQL.
- Oversee field sampling campaigns and collaborate with commercial fleets, communities, and research partners.
- Prepare technical reports, policy briefings, and peer-reviewed manuscripts.
- Support development of sustainable harvest strategies and quota management recommendations.
- Coordinate with regulators, industry stakeholders, and researchers to align science with policy.
- Manage project budgets, timelines, and team activities.
- Mentor junior scientists and supervise field assistants and data technicians.
Qualification
- Master’s degree or PhD in marine biology, fisheries science, or related field.
- Minimum 5 years of experience in fisheries science or data analysis.
- Strong statistical and data analysis skills (R, Python, SQL).
- Experience with stock assessments and population dynamics.
- Proficiency in GIS and spatial analysis.
- Excellent written and oral communication; ability to present to diverse audiences.
- Willingness to undertake fieldwork and travel within NZ.
- Knowledge of NZ fisheries legislation and policy (desirable).
