Job description

NovaGuard Insurance Group is hiring a Senior Insurance Underwriter to join our New York City team. As a key member of our underwriting function, you will evaluate complex commercial lines, determine coverage terms, and set pricing that aligns with our risk appetite and profitability goals. Responsibility

  • Underwrite complex commercial lines (property, casualty, and specialty) to ensure accurate risk selection and pricing.
  • Evaluate exposures, review loss runs, and determine policy terms, conditions, and endorsements.
  • Collaborate with brokers to obtain complete submissions and negotiate terms that balance risk and client needs.
  • Develop and maintain pricing models and rating plans using internal systems and market data.
  • Ensure adherence to underwriting guidelines, regulatory requirements, and company risk appetite.
  • Mentor junior underwriters and provide timely feedback on file quality and decision rationale.
  • Drive renewal strategies and client retention through proactive risk assessment and service excellence.
  • Contribute to portfolio management by monitoring profitability and trend indicators.

Qualification

  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Risk Management, or related field.
  • Minimum 5 years of commercial lines underwriting experience with a proven track record.
  • Strong knowledge of P&C products, rating frameworks, and coverage forms.
  • Proficiency with underwriting software, data analytics tools, and advanced Excel skills.
  • Excellent communication, negotiation, and relationship-building abilities.
  • Active P&C insurance license or willingness to obtain; CPCU, ARM, or similar certification is a plus.
  • Analytical mindset with ability to interpret loss runs, financial statements, and exposure data.
  • Ability to work cross-functionally in a fast-paced, client-focused environment.
