Job description
Join the Pacific Northwest Climate & Weather Institute as a Senior Meteorologist and lead the development of high-impact forecast guidance and climate analytics for critical decision-making.
We specialize in cutting-edge atmospheric science, data-driven forecasting, and proactive risk assessment to support aviation, energy, agriculture, and public safety across the Pacific Northwest. You will collaborate with cross-disciplinary teams to transform complex meteorological data into actionable insights for stakeholders and partners.
We offer a dynamic, research-forward environment with opportunities to publish, present, and influence policy and operations at scale. If you are passionate about turning data into decisions and advancing the science of weather and climate, we want to hear from you.
Responsibility
- Lead and coordinate meteorological forecasting projects, delivering timely, accurate weather guidance to internal teams and external partners.
- Develop, validate, and operationalize numerical weather prediction (NWP) models and data assimilation techniques.
- Design and maintain climate data pipelines, perform statistical downscaling, and produce actionable climate risk insights.
- Create interactive dashboards and visualizations to communicate forecasts and climate trends to non-technical stakeholders.
- Collaborate with cross-disciplinary teams (aviation, energy, agriculture, emergency management) to support decision-making processes.
- Author technical reports, contribute to peer-reviewed publications, and present findings at conferences.
- Mentor junior meteorologists and data analysts, fostering a culture of rigorous analysis and knowledge sharing.
Qualification
- Master's or PhD in Meteorology, Atmospheric Science, or related field.
- 5+ years of experience in operational forecasting, weather research, or climate analytics.
- Strong proficiency in Python and MATLAB; experience with R and SQL is a plus.
- Hands-on experience with numerical weather prediction models (e.g., WRF/WRF-ARW), data assimilation, and ensemble forecasting.
- Demonstrated ability to build data visualization solutions (Tableau, Power BI, Python visualization libraries) and work with GIS tools (ArcGIS, QGIS).
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to translate complex science for diverse audiences.
- Ability to manage multiple projects in a fast-paced environment and collaborate effectively with stakeholders.
