Job description

Global Water Alliance is seeking a Senior Water and Sanitation Engineer to lead high-impact projects across East Africa. This role blends technical excellence, program management, and community engagement to deliver safe water and dignified sanitation solutions for underserved communities. You will design, implement, and supervise water supply and wastewater treatment systems, mentor local teams, and collaborate with government and NGO partners to scale results.

Responsibility

  • Lead the design, procurement, construction, and commissioning of water supply, sanitation, and wastewater treatment facilities.
  • Oversee project planning, budgeting, risk management, and monitoring and evaluation against donor requirements.
  • Ensure compliance with local regulations and international standards; prepare environmental and social impact assessments as needed.
  • Coordinate with local authorities, utilities, communities, and partners to ensure stakeholder buy-in and sustainability.
  • Develop technical specifications, review designs, perform hydraulic modeling (EPANET, WaterGEMS), and ensure quality control.
  • Build local capacity through training, mentoring, and knowledge transfer to engineers and technicians.
  • Report on project progress, outcomes, and lessons learned to donors and leadership.

Qualification

  • Bachelor’s in Civil, Environmental, or Water Resources Engineering; Master’s preferred.
  • Minimum 7 years of experience in water, sanitation, and/or wastewater projects; field experience in developing contexts is an advantage.
  • Professional Engineer license or equivalent registration; regional certifications are a plus.
  • Strong project management skills with track record of delivering on time and within budget.
  • Proficiency in hydraulic modeling tools (EPANET, WaterGEMS) and GIS; data-driven approach to decision making.
  • Solid knowledge of Kenyan/East African water sector regulations and procurement processes.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication in English; Kiswahili is a plus; strong cross-cultural collaboration.
